Description de la formation
Le Master of Advanced Studies (MAS) est une formation postgrade donnée par les hautes écoles et elle équivaut à au moins 60 crédits ECTS.
Le Diploma of Advanced Studies (DAS) est une formation postgrade donnée par les hautes écoles et elle équivaut à au moins 30 crédits ECTS.
Le Certificate of Advanced Studies (CAS) est une formation postgrade donnée par les hautes écoles et elle équivaut à au moins 10 crédits ECTS.
Program
The MAS is composed of coursework and a dissertation. It is organized in three parts:
- A core curriculum (equivalent to Diploma of Advanced Studies) of 3 months full time courses. Their topics are related to different humanitarianism concepts. The courses take place from September to December and are completed by an individual paper to submit in January.
- Two elective courses (equivalent to Certificates of Advanced Studies) on a specific subject of the student's choice:
- Designing Strategies and Projects for Humanitarian Action
- Communication and Advocacy for Humanitarian Action
- Health in Humanitarian Emergencies
- One elective course is available as distance learning programme
- Research courses and a dissertation on a topic of humanitarian action chosen by the participant.
The Master of Advanced Studies in Humanitarian Action is flexible and modular, allowing students to choose among 2 Options to organize their studies.
Option 1 (one academic year):
- The MAS starts in September with a core course (DAS) focusing on context analysis
- It continues with 2 practical specialized courses (CAS) over Spring
- Several classes of dissertation methods are given throughout the academic year
- A dissertation has to be handed out over Summer in order to complete and obtain the MAS
Option 2 (2 or 3 academic years):
- In this Option, students can start the MAS with the core course (DAS) or with the specialized course of their choice (CAS)
- The students continue with 2 practical specialized courses (CAS) over Spring
- The students have the flexibility to spread all other courses throughout the 2 to 3 remaining years. The detailed study plan is to be discussed with the Head of Learning
- A dissertation has to be handed out in order to complete and obtain the MAS
Objectives
Over the course of their studies, participants will:
- Reflect on their humanitarian experience from an interdisciplinary perspective
- Acquire methodological, conceptual, and practical tools in order to improve humanitarian intervention strategies
- Build upon their existing analytical skills through the critical analysis of contemporary humanitarian crises, using case studies from armed conflicts, disasters triggered by natural hazards, and situations of social exclusion.
- Develop specific competencies in areas such as health, law, communication, advocacy and negotiation, programme and people management.
Admission
Conditions d’admission
- A bachelor’s degree or an equivalent, university degree requiring three year’s of study, plus a minimum of two years work experience in the humanitarian, social or development sector OR at least five years work experience in the humanitarian, social or development sector.
- Good level of English language skills: proof of level of competence through a TOEIC/TOEFL/IELTS certificate or other proof of English language competency.
Audience
Professsionals working in humanitarian action or in an international organization wishing to reflect critically on his/her own experience in an academic setting.
Coûts
MAS in one year: CHF 15'000.-
MAS in 2-3 years: CHF 17'000.-
DAS only: CHF 8'000.-
